A. LOPES MENDES WAS A PORTUGUESE OFFICIAL WHO WAS POSTED IN GOA BETWEEN 1862-73. HE WAS A SKILLED ARTIST WHO SET ABOUT RECORDING EVERY ASPECT OF GOAN LIFE COSTUMES, PEOPLE FESTIVITIES, LANDSCAPE AND BUILDINGS. HE RECORDED HIS WORK IN 2 VOLUMES CALLED 'A INDIA PORTUGUEZA' WHICH WAS PUBLISHED IN 1886.
EARLY VIEWS
MANY TRAVELERS ON THEIR VISITS MADE A PICTORIAL RECORD. NOTABLE AMONG THEM IS J.H. LINSCHOTEN A DUCTCHMAN WHO PUBLISHED THE 'HISTORY OF NAVIGATION' (AMSTERDAM) 1638. THERE ALSO EXIST A SERIES OF 141 WATERCOLOURS OF AN UNKNOWN INDIAN ARTIST DEPLICTING LIFE IN THE EARLY 16TH CENTURY.

LISBON BASED JOAO LOUREIRO HAS COMPILED A UNIQUE COLLECTION OF POSTCARDS OF THE PORTUGUESE COLONIES. THIS IS AN ESSENTIAL SOURCE OF INFORMATION OF THE OVERSEAS PORTUGUESE PRESENCE AT THE TURN OF THE 19TH CENTURY TILL THE MID 20TH CENTURY. HIS PUBLICATIONS COVER MACAU, CAPE VERDE, GUINEA, SAO TOME AND PRINCIPE, ANGOLA, MOZAMBIQUE, GOA, DAMAN AND DIU AND TIMOR.
